Renee Fleming Bronx Concert reviews
GETTING OLD IS TOUGH
Upon leaving the stage, Mr. Mathis was clearly tired and very much worked. The opening act here was Renee Fleming and they played for about 40 minutes. To me it seemed as if he was holding back for a reason. They were very good and spot on. He did not sing all of his hits such as : Maria, Wonderful Wonderful, What Will My Mary Say, When Sunny Gets Blue and even more. The hits that he did sing was mostly by medley with shortened versions. I think that he did the best he could and surely gave everything he had left in the tank. Intermission followed by Johnny Mathis. He performed 67 minutes in a very short show. The sound was fair at best. Johnny's voice although still there and nice sounding, was not as strong as it was 2 years earlier. This is one of my toughest reviews to give. I am beginning to think that being 82 years old is taking its toll on Mr. Mathis. I believe I got what I wanted out of this show by paying homage to a man who gave so much to the music industry. If you are a huge Johnny Mathis fan then this show will still have good meaning for you. With that said, my review is being honest and forthright as for the rating of just 2 stars. To me it was a real nice way of saying thanks Mr. Mathis for the great songs you left us.
